Galleria dell'Accademia was founded in 1784 by Grand Duke Peter Leopold of Lorraine as a teaching facility for students of the Academy of Fine Arts. The undisputed centerpiece is Michelangelo's David, moved here from Piazza della Signoria in 1873 to protect it from weather damage.
